Essential Supplies Needed...

Most of the time, health insurance will pay for medical supplies you need, but there are many times that you need more for whatever reason. Finding the online often becomes necessary. Here are some basic items that may steer you in the right direction...

1. It is important have the right supplies with you and at home when you need them. Although there are a lot of different medical supplies needed to care for a trach, it is good to start with the basics and have a First Aid Kit available. This one is a great starter kit.

2. Another great essential thing to have is an emergency go bag to take with you each time you go out. This is a must have that all trach parents need to fill with supplies they may need when an emergency arises with their trachy child.

3. When you are on the go, it is important to be prepared. Adding a finger pulse ox to your emergency bag or suction bag to spot check your child's blood oxygen level is a great way to be prepared for emergencies.

4. Doctors often recommend placing a 2x2 or 4x4 split gauze under the trach to keep the trach from irritating the skin and to soak up any secretions that the trachy coughs out.

5.Sometimes explaining a trach and/or vent to a sibling can be very difficult. However, one of our trach moms wrote this amazing children's book to help explain the significance of a trach and how trachs are only a different way to breath, not something to be scared of.

6. A trach is basically a direct shot into the esophagus and lungs. Having that opening can dry out those areas when they need moisture. To help keep the airway and lings moist some trachies wear a HME (Humidification Moisture Exchange). Although there are many types of HMEs this barrel style is popular in the trach community.

7.While not extremely essential, a PMV (Passy-Muir Valve) is a "cap" that is placed on the trach to help with strengthening the airway, speaking, and swallow reflex. It is often referred to as a speaking valve.

8. While there are many types of portable suction machines  there are also stationary suction machines that can be used at home. This particular suction machine is an example of a stationary device.
